Performing Gender:
Dancing in your shoes
Throughout 2023, we teamed up with British Council and went to Budapest, Bologna, Leeds, Ljubljana, Madrid, Marseille, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg and Umeå to meet 9 dancing communities composed of Queer people from various backgrounds to discover how these communities explore Dance as a medium to deepen their understanding of questions around gender and sexual identity.
It was a transformative opportunity to see first hand how different queer communities in different regions interact with their own sexuality and gender, where we witnessed moving moments of liberation and companionship but also in some cases saw of how far European society still needs to push in order to grant equal rights for everyone accross the continent.

Performing Gender is a series of European collaborative projects using the Performing Arts, and Dance in particular, to deepen understanding of questions around gender and sexual identity. The results have included greater innovation from artists, strengthened communities and excellent dance works.
The 2020-2023 edition, Dancing In Your Shoes, has explored how artistic processes can support community-building through genuine Co-Design between professional artists and target community members. It is promoted by a network of eleven partner organisations, active in the field of dance, performing arts and the promotion of LGBTI and women’s culture in eight European countries.
