What's Next in Art?
What can be the role of art in a crisis? Self-isolation perspectives on freedom, art and the future
When we chose to celebrate freedom for our birthday this year, we wanted to present perspectives that defy the dominant narratives and challenge concepts of freedom. We did this with From Freedom To Freedom, a collection of 10 perspectives on what freedom means now, but it didn’t seem enough to only present these perspectives, without questioning the role of their medium. Freedom and art are so deeply weaved together that it might be hard to separate them - art is freedom, even if just freedom for expressing freedom. But what else can art do for us (and us for it) in a time of crisis?
Discussions over what is the role of art in a society are never ending, because a single answer can never be produced. There seems to be a consensus, however, that it is necessary, that it flourishes in times of crisis. These are perhaps the times when it is needed the most to create space to reflect and to think of a new, better future together, to create change. We have reached what feels a global standstill, but art and culture haven't stopped, instead transferring and adapting from the outside to the inside of our homes, there for us for solace or for reflection whilst we rethink: what comes next?

We invited 9 artists and cultural agents to reflect on the present context and to discuss how we can build what comes next for art and culture, from the opportunities of today. In a 3-episode series, What’s Next? explores their perspectives.

I think people will move from cities into the countryside with internet so they can balance screen time and technology with nature and enjoy a slower and healthier lifestyle.
